On April 9, 2024, the India Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) issued an important update regarding, CCTV cameras & systems. Below are the details.
Beginning October 9th, 2024, all CCTV equipment must comply with the following India BIS Standard.
Indian Standard -IS 13252: Part 1: 2010
- Per IS 13252-1, CCTV cameras and equipment must meet the essential requirement (ER) as per Annex A.
- It is mandatory for all the CCTV camera product categories to obtain test reports from a BIS-recognized lab. This will be a prerequisite for obtaining a license to use the India Standard Mark for the product.
*Please note: This standard must be met for all existing India BIS Certifications and new India BIS Certifications*
The following five (5) security requirements must be met (included in the standard), with the goal of protecting sensitive information captured by CCTV systems and ensuring their overall effectiveness.
- Physical Security: Tamper-resistant enclosures and locking mechanisms.
- Access Control: User authentication, role-based access control (RBAC), and regular permission reviews.
- Network Security: Encrypted data transmission.
- Software Security: Regular updates, disabling unused features, and strong password policies.
- Penetration Testing: Identifying and addressing vulnerabilities through security assessments.
