Indian AIS Homologation Service

General Information:

The Indian government enacted the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) in 1989 covering regulations for automobiles and automotive components.  Under this law, Rule No. 126 was established to define the process of Type Approval for automotive components via the AIS (Automotive Industry Standard) certification scheme.  Authorized bodies such as ARAI and ICAT can carry out AIS testing and certification.

AIS certification is based mainly on safety requirements and is mandatory for many types of safety related vehicle components.  The following components require either an AIS certification or must be tested as part of the overall vehicle homologation:

  • Safety Glass
  • Horns
  • CNG regulators
  • Bulbs
  • Speed Limiting devices
  • Wheel rims
  • Safety reflectors
  • Light/ Light signaling devices
  • Door locks and retention components
  • Reflective Tape
  • Brake hoses
  •  Tires
  • Seat Belts
  • Warning triangle
  • Fuel tanks
  • LED Light Bulbs (replaceable)
  • Rear Marking Plate
  • Wiper Blades
  • Battery (Lead Acid)
  • High Security Registration Plate (HSRP)

Challenges Obtaining and Maintaining AIS Certification

Obtaining homologation in a fast, expedient manner should be the goal for any certification program.  There may be several roadblocks to a smooth certification process.  The following issues can reduce the efficiency of AIS homologations:

  • Remote communication particularly with Indian certification bodies is challenging
  • Not providing correct test samples and documents
  • Test samples are delayed in shipping, or get stuck in India customs
  • Optimizing certifications to include the maximum models or part numbers possible
  • Difficulty adding new or modified parts
  • Delays in scheduling or failures during initial factory inspection
  • Standards expire, requiring updates to certificates

Other Certifications Required

For electrical products, depending on the type of equipment, additional certifications other than WPC may be required for India.  Among these are BIS for many types of electrical products, and WPC for wireless products.  More detailed information can be found by clicking on the links to these specific services.  For more information about what certifications are required for your product please contact us.

Certification Details

Mark – Not required.  Type approval six-digit ID must be marked on the part.

In-Country Representative:  Not required

In-Country Testing:  Required

Expiration Details – Valid for 2 years.  Renewed with subsequent factory inspection

Product Surveillance – Factory inspections are required, and generally occur every two years.

Certificate Alert and Tracking System (CATS)

Untimely expirations of certificates can cause delays in product deliveries.  Re-certification of products will generally be treated as new submittals instead of certificate renewals.  This can be time-consuming and costly.  G&M provides a web-based certification tracking system that alerts users when expirations are coming, provides on-line storage of important certification documentation, and is searchable by certification specific criteria.  For more information on this system see our CATS page.
